Me & my hubby were requested by his Malay ex-colleague-cum-good friend to be his translator-cum-"matchmaker" when he & his family were to visit the bride's parents to discuss about the wedding dowry details yesterday (fyi- the bride is a Chinese). Of cuz' we gladly lended our helping hands since we know both the bride and groom-to-be, and my hubby is so-called the CHINA translator...muhaha...
It was quite an experience, as we see that the groom comes from a traditional Islamic family while the bride is from a traditional Chinese/Hokkien family background..so we were kinda worried that the negotiation part might be difficult. Its not about the dowry, more about the Martell which is supposed to be given by the groom side to the bride side, especially after we have seen displays of many bottles of Martell at the bride's place!!!
(Getting worried...) Thankfully the parents of the bride are quite open-minded even thou' they don't look like they are
and we managed to convince them to change the request for Martell to something else..most likely maybe both sides will exchange soft drinks lor. Anyway, customs are pretty flexible nowadays, so long both families are willing to give and take, it should be ok bah...Throughout the meeting, the bride's parents kept mentioning "so long she likes lor..up to them lor..." Think its also quite hard for them to accept that their only youngest daughter is going to be converted to Islamic especially they themselves got pray to Gods one...sigh, but so long its for the happiness of their daughter, no matter how hard, they will also accept...Hope he will treat her good good forever...
Well, the first discussion ends well, with most of the important details being brought up and settled. We even have to write minutes of meeting oh.. haha..no la, its just informal one la...
